Aunque los fundadores de la Revolución científica fueron un grupo de pensadores sinceramente creyentes, en el siglo XVIII se inició un proceso de alejamiento entre religión y ciencia, interpretado por algunos como un enfrentamiento inevitable en el que aquélla sería superada por el inmenso poder de ésta. Fruto de una exaltación del reduccionismo científico es la honda fractura que sufre la cultura contemporánea entre quienes pretenden rebajar el papel de la razón y quienes aspiran a revivir con exactitud la pureza de los primeros ideales ilustrados.
